Among the types of trekking jackets, you can find jackets for rain and wind, which are designed for specific conditions. The first type is perfect if you want to protect yourself from the rain on the trail, and a windbreaker is ideal for summer and spring. On the other hand, a down jacket is a common choice for the mountains, and is made of natural or synthetic down. Natural filling provides high thermal insulation, and a jacket made of synthetic material is much more resistant to moisture. On the market, you will also find softshell jackets, which are designed with two layers, the first of which is a lining and the second of which is a flexible material. It ensures a high level of waterproofing, protection from the wind and proper air circulation. Sometimes you can find a hydrophobic DWR - Durable Water Repellent coating, thanks to which water slides off the surface of the material instead of being absorbed.

When choosing a suitable hiking and trekking jacket, pay attention to the waterproofness, which is measured in millimeters of water column. Good quality models have a waterproof rating of over 5,000 mm. However, the right jacket has a rating of 10,000 mm or more, which guarantees waterproofness. The jacket must also be breathable, which is measured by the parameter g/h20/m2. The higher the value, the better the product is at wicking away moisture.

When choosing a hiking jacket or trekking jacket, choose a model that is suitable for the prevailing conditions. For transitional seasons such as spring and fall, rain and wind jackets are better suited. Softshell jackets, which are additionally equipped with a water-repellent layer, are also excellent. For colder days and winter, jackets with a membrane are definitely a must to ensure high thermal insulation. During warmer temperatures or in windy weather, breathable models are the best choice. 3-in-1 hiking jackets, consisting of a thermal layer and an outer shell that can be separated, are a good solution. Depending on the conditions, you will then have a fleece jacket or a jacket with thick insulation.  
When choosing, it is also worth paying attention to all the elements of the garment. A tailored cut guarantees comfort while wearing, and a slightly extended back, adjustable hood or ribbed sleeves will work in all conditions. Functional pockets will allow you to store essential items while traveling.
