A visually appealing (in terms of design) piece of cookware. Surprisingly functional. It can be used as a small frying pan, saucepan, bowl or container. The only thing it won’t work for is as a mug, as it has a large diameter. Relatively thick steel. Not nearly as sturdy as reviewers describe, but considerably more robust than most cookware. The base diameter, approx. 14 cm, is ideal for using any camping heat source, including a campfire. The long handle is ideal for use over a campfire, although it does get hot, so a cloth or glove is essential. The capacity is measured to the brim. It’s the same as that of today’s most popular camping pot: the 750 ml titanium mug. The mug wins on weight – it’s three times lighter and you can drink straight from it. When it comes to cooking and eating from the pot, the MSR pot wins. The lid may be a disadvantage or an advantage, depending on the user. When in use, it makes a lot of noise. (In the transport position, it makes no noise at all.) Hunters, anglers and anyone who values discretion are unlikely to be pleased. The pot can be used as an alarm; it makes a noise when tapped. Along with the pot, I bought the GSI Bowl + Mug set (a bowl and a mug). These are two containers, each holding 20 US fluid ounces, or 590 ml. The inner one, when used with its lid, can serve as a mug, even though it has a large diameter. It’s a quite functional set and, what’s more, it fits perfectly inside the MSR pot. There’s just enough space between them to fit a tea towel. The weight of the set, including a spork, is just under 500 grams. That’s quite a lot. However, if you’re planning to cook over a campfire (eliminating the weight of a stove and fuel), it’s a perfectly sensible set to consider.
