For a recreational game of hockey they are fine. I've had a few knockdowns and I've been hit with the puck a few times and I'm fine. It's worth noting, however, that these are not trousers with protectors everywhere, and they are not of the same thickness everywhere. If you're unlucky enough to hit a poorly protected area, such as the back of the thigh, it will hurt just as much as it would without the trousers. The hips, tailbone and front of the thigh are quite well protected. The size chart said I should take an L, I bought an XL and it fits well. In my case the weight fluctuates so it's better to have a slight allowance.
